I made this photo of Laurent in the alley next to the cafe. At one point, he climbed into a shopping cart that had been abandoned there and I made 4 images that became the series, « Shopping ». The shopping cart is for Americans an item of everyday life, but for the large homeless population in SF, it is a way of trying to hold on to some bare minimum of possessions.
